Per Skok, from Vulgar Latin *excurtus (“short”) with metaphorical meaning. Cognate with Romanian curtus (“short, brief”), possibly Albanian shkurt (“in short”). Snoj alternatively reconstructs Proto-Slavic *skъrtъ (“shrunk, cut short”), from *skъrnǫti (“to trim, to shrink”).
