=== Etymology ===
From Proto-Balto-Slavic *śárˀkāˀ. When compared with Ancient Greek κόραξ (kórax, “raven”) a Proto-Indo-European form *ḱor-h₂k- can be reconstructed, however they may well be independent formations. In any case, both forms ultimately go back to Proto-Indo-European *ḱer- (“crow, raven”), whence also, with various suffixes, Ancient Greek κορώνη (korṓnē, “crow”); Latin cornīx (“crow”) and corvus (“raven”).
