From Proto-Semitic *ŝVp- (“tuft of hair”). Cognate with Arabic شَعْفة (šaʕfa, “a lock of hair”) and Biblical Hebrew שָׂפָם (śɔp̄ɔ́m, “moustache”), probably formed from שָׂפָה (“lip”) + ־ם (-m, suffix). Compare also Arabic صُوف (ṣūf, “wool”).
