Ultimately from Classical Persian شَاهْمَاتْ (šāh-māt, “checkmate”, literally “the king is stunned”). The usage of it to mean "chess" is a phono-semantic matching of Russian шахматы (šaxmaty, “chess”). Compare Tajik шоҳмот (šohmot, “chess”).
