Stemming from a verb corresponding with Old High German dweran, dueran, thueran, tuiran, Old English þweran (“to twist, stir, twirl”); potentially found in dialectal Swedish tvära, tsvara (“to stir”); ultimately stemming from Proto-Germanic *þweraną (“to stir”). See also Russian творить (tvoritʹ).
Cognate to Old High German dwiril, German Quirl, Old English þwirel; also Norwegian Nynorsk tvirla, English twirl, Old High German dweran, German zwirlen, quirlen, Dutch dwarrelen, all from Proto-Germanic *þwirilaz (“stirring-stick, whisk”).
