The regional dative singular þvætti is preserved from the original declension of this word in Old Norse (þváttr) which belonged to the masculine strong u-stem third declension (in the same manner as máttur, sláttur, þáttur, etc.). It is now normatively in the first declension after the change of -vá- to -vo-.
