From Proto-West Germanic *þuksōn, a variant of *þukisōn (“to make cloudy, darken”), derived from Proto-Germanic *þukōną (“to fog, be misty”), of uncertain origin. Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *tewh₂- (“to swell”). Cognate with Old Norse þoka (“fog, mist”).
