From archaic ólpa (“wide coat with cap”), of uncertain origin, though probably from a Proto-Germanic *wulpǭ (“woven garment”), from a Proto-Indo-European *welp- (“to bend, wrap around”), which appears to be a p-extension of *welH- (“to roll”), thus denoting a "rolled-up garment". See also Middle English wlappen (“to wrap”), Sami wuölppo (“woman's garment”), the latter which appears to be borrowed from North Germanic.
