Of unknown origin according to Zaicz. Some, e.g. Róna-Tas and Berta, support Munkácsi's etymology as a loan from Alanic *widawa-čī, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *HwidʰáwaH (modern Ossetian идӕдз (idæʒ)), with the same development of *wi- as in öl.
