Unknown. Old Norse ǫmurligr (“repulsive, hideous”). Related to Norwegian Nynorsk omurlaus (“carefree”). May be related to apur (“hard, bitter”) which is reconstructed as Proto-Germanic *ampraz. ömur- would need to come from Proto-Germanic *amuraz.
