From Old Norse ófreskja, from the adjective ófreskr (“clairvoyant”) and the noun ófreski (“clairvoyance, second sight”), of uncertain origin, perhaps from Proto-Germanic *unfriþiskaz (as per S. Bugge 1885), but according to F. Holthausen cognate with Gothic 𐍆𐍂𐌰𐌸𐌹 (fraþi), then from *fraþiskaz.
