From Proto-Norse *ᚢᚾᚦᚨᚱᛒᚢ (*unþarbu), attested in the late genitive plural ᚢᚦᛡᚱᛡᛒᛡ (uþᴀrᴀbᴀ /ūþarᵃβa/). Equivalent to ó- (“un-”) + þǫrf (“necessity”), and often difficult to tell apart from adjective óþarfr (“harmful”).
