Inherited from Vulgar Latin *inclāvāre or *inclāviāre, from Latin clāvis (“key”) or clāvus (“nail”) (see also clāvāre (“to nail”)). Probably influenced by cheie. Compare also Friulian inclavâ, French enclouer.
