The premier étage is thus the first floor above the ground floor, i.e. what is referred to in North America as the second floor, and so on. Usage is divided in Quebec, with some buildings following the North American English practice and others, especially modern and/or government buildings, following the general French practice. À l'étage means on the second storey of a two-storey building. Contrary to what one might expect, French étage (as well as French stage) carries very different meanings that its cognate English stage, and étage is rarely the appropriate translation of "stage". In fact, in French, it is more frequently the Ancient Greek-derived stade (a more distant relative) that is used to translate "stage", in its meanings indicating a phase or part of a process or progression. ==== Derived terms ==== bel étage de bas étage étagement étager étagère ==== Descendants ==== === Verb === étage inflection of étager: first/third-person singular present indicative/subjunctive second-person singular imperative === Further reading === “étage”, in Trésor de la langue française informatisé [Digitized Treasury of the French Language], 2012 === Anagrams === gâtée
