Inherited from Middle French eschauguette, escarguaite, from Old French eschaugaite, escalgaite, escalguaite (“guard-duty, a sentinel, troop of sentinels”), from Frankish *skarwahta (“guard-duty, group of sentinels”), from *skara ("troop"; from Proto-Germanic *skarō (“troop, share”), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ker- (“to cut”)) + *wahta (“watch, guard”). Cognate with Middle High German scharwahte, German Scharwache (“patrol”). More at share, wait.
