Inherited from Ottoman Turkish چلتیك (çeltik), from Classical Persian شلتوک (šaltôk, “rice still in the husk; rice-hull”), a compound of شالی (šâli, “rice hull”) + توک (tôk, “bundle, fagot; handle, grip”).
