From Ottoman Turkish چكنمك (çekinmek, “to draw back and recoil, through fear, scruple or dislike”), from Ottoman Turkish چكمك (çekmek, “to pull, to draw, to attract”), from Proto-Turkic *ček- (“to pull, to drive towards oneself”), morphologically çek- + -in + -gen.
