=== Etymology ===
From Middle Low German orsake (“reason, cause”), related to German Ursache. It is a compound of or- + sake / ur- + Sache, from Proto-Germanic *uz- (“out”) and *sakō (“case”). A similar derivation existed in medieval Scandinavian, but with a slightly different meaning, cf. Old Danish orsagh (“an excuse”) and Old Norse órsekr (“innocent”).
