Old Norse árangr (“season; annual yield”), probably a compound of ár (“year”) + gangr (“walking, pace, course”). Old Norse árgangr (“year, period of a year, tax year”), in which contrarily the r is not part of the stem, could be newer formation. By surface analysis, ár + -angur.
