In the Vietnamese Penal Code, life imprisonment is the most severe penalty after the death penalty (án tử hình). It is applicable to "particularly serious" crimes. Under certain legal conditions and good conduct, a life sentence may eventually be commuted to a fixed term (usually 20 or 30 years).
