First attested in 1723. From álom (“dream”) + szuszék (“a container storing grains or flour”). Folk speech often uses containers in compound words to express a negative quality. Compare méregzsák (“hothead”), szentfazék (“God botherer”), szeszkazán (“drunkard”).
