Derived from Norman or Picard franc (“frank”). The original meaning of à la franquette was "frankly" (franchement), "sincerely" (sincèrement). Claude Duneton has the expression as appearing in contrast with à la française, which meant "luxuriously; with great helpfulness and arrangement", etc.
