Uncertain, Finn Magnusson equates it with þjálfi (“worker”), some have compared it to Þjelfar from Guta saga, Schröder derives it from Proto-Germanic *Þelfô from Proto-Indo-European *telbʰ- from Proto-Indo-European *(s)tel- (“to drip”), Olrik equated it with Þjelfar and gave the etymology as þel + fari, Guðbrandur Vigfússon suggested that it's related to English delve, some equate it with þjálmi (“noose”), Mogk derived it from Proto-Germanic *Þewa-albiz and Lieberman gives a similar derivation of Proto-Germanic *Þewawulfaz from *þewaz (“slave”) + *wulfaz (“wulf”) essentialy meaning "servant".
