Überbleibsel
التعريفات والمعاني
== German ==
=== Etymology ===
17th century, from überbleiben (“to remain”) + -sel, likely after Dutch and Middle Dutch overblijfsel.
=== Pronunciation ===
IPA(key): /ˈyːbərˌblaɪ̯psəl/, [ˈʔyː.bɐˌblaɪ̯p.sl̩]
Hyphenation: Über‧bleib‧sel
=== Noun ===
Überbleibsel n (strong, genitive Überbleibsels, plural Überbleibsel) (possibly slightly informal)
remnant, relic, relict
Synonyms: Relikt, Rest, Überrest
==== Usage notes ====
Duden labels this word “colloquial”, which is a stark overstatement and perhaps based solely on the fact that the underlying verb überbleiben is colloquial. DWDS has no label at all. At any rate, the word is quite usual in formal writing, e.g. in academic texts. A tendency to avoid it might exist in the very most formal of contexts, such as legal documents.
