Inherited from Middle High German ulloch, ullouch, from Old High German ullouh, contraction of unilouh, from Proto-West Germanic *unnjalauk; equivalent to Önn + Looch, both of which originally meant “onion” in the dialects.
Compare for the former Dutch ui (“onion”), for the latter German Lauch (“leek”).
