== Turkish == === Alternative forms === Çerkes === Etymology === Inherited from Ottoman Turkish چركس (çerkes), from Russian черке́с (čerkés). === Proper noun === Çerkez Circassian (person) ==== Usage notes ==== Although until recently Çerkez was the sole official spelling in Turkish, many Circassians themselves prefer Çerkes, with an -s, regarding the -z form as incorrect and advocating for its replacement. Some may use this spelling on purpose to spite Circassians; thus, while not inherently offensive, the spelling with -z has sometimes been used as a slur, especially online.
