Uncertain. Probably from an original lake name *Ätsävesi, *Ätsäjärvi (> *Ätsäri > Ähtäri). One possibility is that the initial part is of Sami origin, akin to Northern Sami ahcit. Rahkonen (2013) however does not consider this likely, and speculates that the -äri ending may in fact be original as well, although he considers it more likely that the original form was closer to Ähtävä.
